Vmware Windows Cluster Shared Disk

Learning has never been so easy!

Extend Microsoft Cluster Shared Disk in VMware. A VM shared disk on Microsoft Cluster Service (MSCS) is running out of disk space. The VMs are on a single host (aka cluster in a box - CIB). I can think of two ways to expand the disk storage. Obviously the latter seems simpler, but it requires special attention. Let’s look at a way with Windows Server you can “cheat” this so to speak if you don’t have a cluster configuration such as Windows Failover Cluster services running between VMs. Share VMDK Data Between VMs Multi-Writer Disk Without Cluster File System. Let’s first look at how to create a multi-writer VMDK to an existing virtual machine.

This is simple step by step for adding shared storage to virtual machine on VMware ESXi using vCenter.

C# Client doesn’t have specific features like choose multi writer flag. So better do to do it using Web Client. The multi-writer option allows VMFS-backed disks to be shared by multiple virtual machines. Used by Third-party cluster-aware applications like RedHat 6 or later with GFS File systems and Oracle RAC Clusters. N Disks that are shared between nodes. A shared disk is required as a quorum disk. In a cluster of virtual machines across physical hosts, the shared disk must be on a Fibre Channel (FC) SAN. N A private heartbeat network between nodes. You can set up the shared disks and private heartbeat using one of several clustering configurations.

Step 1: Edit Settings of first vm click add.

Step 2: Select Hard Disk, select create new virtual disk

Step 3: Modify Disk size and select think provisioned Eager Zeroed and select a datastore with browse

Step 4: Change the Virtual device node to SCSI (1:0) or higher you cannot use (0:1)

Step 5: Then click finish to create the disk.

Step 6: You then need to shut the machine down to modify the SCSI controller options

Set them as required for you matching VM type

Windows Server 2008 SP2 and above LSI Logic SAS

You need to change the SCSI Bus Sharing to Virtual and click okay.

Step 7: Adding the same disk to second server. Add HDD again but on select a disk choose the Use an existing disk option

Step 8: Click browse to select the same disk you created in stage 1 it will be in a folder with the same name as the first server.

Step 9: Change the SCSI option to match the number on the disk SCSI (1:0)

Step 10: Check the SCSI controller is set up in the same way as step 6 and step 7

Step 11: Repeat with all additional disks but increase SCSI numbers ie (1:1) (1:2) etc

The end of the VMware KB mentioned in the conclusion has links to what I found as the most helpful article. For VMware/ESXi 5.5 Update 2: http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-55/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-552-setup-mscs.pdf

Were there any special attributes on the disk inside windows itself. EG, marking it as shared or did Windows auto detect it ?
