Crytek's experimental (this is still under development) real-time ray tracing demo (seen below) was created with a new version of CryEngine’s Total Illumination, a feature that will be implemented into the company's game engine later this year. But here's the interesting part: Crytek says its ray-tracing magic is API and hardware agnostic, capable of running on any modern graphics card from Nvidia and AMD.
To drive the point home, the 'Neon Noir' demo scenes below are real-time renders, running on AMD's Radeon 56 GPU.

Crytek also says its upcoming technology will be optimized to benefit from performance enhancements delivered by graphics cards like the RTX 2080 Ti and Radeon VII, and is supported by graphics APIs like Vulkan and DX12.
Before we all get too excited, let's remember this is about more than goodwill toward gamers. Crytek wants game developers to use CryEngine (this is certainly a compelling argument) and has taken this opportunity to remind said developers that CryEngine has the benefit of 5% royalties, no license fees and full source code availability.
Here's to hoping that when ray tracing does become a household name, the cost to entry is low and the amount of games its featured in is prolific.
