Word couldn’t send mail because of MAPI failure: “Operation not Supported” Posted under MS Outlook, Software by ifoundafix The other day while browsing the Internet, I Found A Fix for a recent problem I was having. The issue is described as follows.
Question
- Windows 10 upgrade breaks Mapi in Office 2010. Microsoft’s latest updates (version 1703 to 1709) causes a failure when trying to save and send a PDF in Microsoft Word and Quickbooks. After the upgrade, mailing directly from Word or Quickbooks causes the following error: Office repair and fixmapi both do not work as well as a reinstall of office.
- Word couldn't send mail because of MAPI failure: 'Unspecified error'. In Microsoft PowerPoint a user attempts to share a presentation as an attachment by email and receives the errors: Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request.
- Mail Recipient uses the MAPI Send Mail association, or the Send mail command. The Microsoft Mail app only contains an association for the MAILTO protocol, so you can't set it as a recipient of the Send mail command.
On a Microsoft® Windows™ operating system, you install Microsoft Office™ and then Lotus Notes®. When you attempt to create a MAPI profile in an Office application, you are unable to do so. In one particular case in which Notes was set as the default e-mail program, when you try to use the Send To feature in an Office application, the following error message displays:
Microsoft Word 365 Mapi Failure
- 'Word couldn't send mail because of MAPI failure: Unspecified Error.'
Uninstalling Notes and Office and then reinstalling Office before Notes did not solve the problem.
Cause
This situation occurs because the Office file (mapisvc.inf) is installed to the c:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemMapi1033 directory instead of the Windowssystem32 directory as in previous Office products.
Answer
This issue was reported to Quality Engineering as SPR# JCAO5CSHDG.
When you install Lotus Notes, Notes looks for the presence of the mapisvc.inf file in the Windowssystem32 directory in order to install and configure its MAPI support but cannot find it.
Workaround:
To work around this issue:
1. Copy the mapisvc.inf file
- from:
c:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemMapi1033
to:
Windowssystem32 directory
2. Then reinstall Notes. The installation should install the file, nwnsp32.dll, into the Windowssystem32 directory and add the following parameters to the mapisvc.inf file in the Windowssystem32 directory.

NOTE: The .dll file indicated here is nwnsp.dll. This correctly references the nwnsp32.dll file. Microsoft's syntax for the .inf file is to leave the '32' off the string. The mapisvc.inf file is supposed to indicate nwnsp.dll and uses the 32-bit driver.

I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to 10. In Windows 7, I used tvhgooglemapi as my default mail app, so I could for instance send attachments from Word or Windows Explorer using Google Webmail, without the need of an actual mail application.
Now that I installed Windows 10, I wanted to give the default Mail app that comes with it a try, so I added my Google account, and I can use it to send and receive mail. However, it does not work from Word 2007 (Office button > Send > E-mail) or Windows Explorer (Send to > Mail recipient), and I get an error message (roughly translated from Dutch): 'There is no e-mail application to execute the requested action. Create a shortcut in Default Applications in the Control Panel if you have an e-mail application installed'.
The Mail app was already set as the default handler for all protocols it can handle (MAILTO, MS_UNISTORE_EMAIL and OUTLOOKMAIL), so I am not sure what to do next. Is that app actually able to handle MAPI mail? Is there a workaround?

The Send to .. Mail Recipient uses the MAPISend Mail association, or the Send mail command.
The Microsoft Mail app only contains an association for the MAILTO protocol, so you can't set it as a recipient of the Send mail command.

It's the same as windows 7 and 8, which both also shipped with no mapi support. You always have to install your own mapi client now. I think they want it to die, especially shipping his many major versions without such support. Vista was the last to come with it out of the box.
