Microsoft initially allowed anyone to upgrade from Windows 7 or 8 for free up until July 2016. However, even after that ended, Microsoft offered a Windows 10 free upgrade to anyone who needed assistive technologies up until the end of 2017. Ultimately, Microsoft probably wasn’t too worried about closing these loopholes for a while, because having more Windows 10 users is obviously nothing but a good thing for the company.
